Viktor Subonj wins Houston Open 3-2 over Razvan Cretu
in a spectacular open finals!
Watch an short MPEG MOVie of one of the great points in the finals and ANOTHER
With a surprising 72 person entry, this Houston Open turned out to be one of the largest in years. Viktor and Razvan Cretu, both US top 10 players, headed a strong field. Top junior Howard Lamb led the under 18 group.
Long time Houston legend, Perry Schwartzberg, competed in his first tournament in almost 15 years. While losing in the first round of the Open division to a strong performance by Carlos Riaza, Perry acquited himself admirably (duece, duece, & duece). A large crowd of spectators assembled to watch this match. Hopefully, we will see a lot more of this smooth player in the future.
There were 11 events including age and rating restricted ones. Doubles were very popular with Bob O'Neill and Hector Bennett faced off against Eric Yeh and his partner Tuan Tran (who eventually won) in the 3 game sizzler 4200 Finals. It was another extremely popular match. The Open quarter final with Idan Levi dropping a tough 5 gamer to Tuan Tran also drew a big crowd.
All in all, everyone had a great time in an very well run event that finished ahead of the projected time schedule. Juniors had a particularly good time. Good food, good friends, next years event is set to be a real barn burner! See you there!
