Dickens on the Strand
Galveston, December 2000
event tickets

This is a yearly festival held on Galveston Island.  It harkens to the Victorian era of the 1800s.  The entire historical district is converted to a English town for one weekend in December.  Hundreds dress in costume of the period of Queen Victoria and celebrate the holiday season.  There are parades, carolers, and open houses, vendors and decorated shops.

This year 750 marched in the "Queen's Parade" which is the first parade on saturday and runs for about 2 miles.  Budweiser even sent their famous Clydesdale beer wagon.  Sue and Terry made the trek this year in costume for the first time.  Sue sewed both of their outfits.  She created Terry a sea-captains outfit based on Captain James Cook.  It doubled as an outfit for the Houston Museum of Natural Science opening of the "Age of Discovery".  While it was a few years out of date for Dickens, it still played well.

Sue made herself two outfits.  Both were precisely detailed.  One was a ball gown in burgundy velvet specifically for the Queen's Ball on Friday night.  The other was a classic victorian dress complete with hoop skirt, double layered cape, and hat.

The Garden Inn on Ball Street served as Sue and Terry's host bed 'n breakfast.  The owners, Pam and Mike Gilbert provided exceptional service and decorated the beautiful victorian home in traditional Christmas fare, complete with complimentary wassle!  Sunday breakfast was especially created for this occasion with a magnificent table setting.

If you are in the Texas Gulf Coast region in December next year, make a point of trying to get to Galveston to experience Dickens on the Strand!
