A River Cruise up the Yangtze River and Three Gorges Dam
The Yangtze River gives life and livelihood to millions and millions of Chinese people up through central China. Our five day cruise up almost 1,000 miles of it, starting at Wuchang (Wuhan), showed us just how much the Yangtze is revered and loved by the people - much like our Mississippi River or the Amazon River or the Nile River. But, the Three Gorges Dam project has caused painful changes for the people to deal with in order to become more energy self-sufficient. The Dam project, in planning for many decades, will cost over 30 billion dollars, displace over 1 million people and change the face of the Yangtze forever. Our visit showed that the Dam project is being accomodated quite well by the people with much help by the government. |
