Exploring the Vast New Territories |
||||||||
| We observed and enjoyed many interesting places in the New Territories - like the fish market with the 3 lb crawfish, the pleasant bird market with all kinds of song birds (Chinese people love birds!), and the flower market with the pretty Lotus blossoms (very pretty).
The meat market had chickens that had both black meat and bones (see right), goat bladders, duck heads, and chicken feet. I draw the line on the latter three items although I don't know why. I ate all these items as flavor and stock in soups and stews without as much as even a tummy ache. These exotic foods are popular with folks in Asia since they do not have big slabs of meat like we do. They have to stretch their protein every time they get it and, sometimes, their protein is exotic by our standards. And, speaking of tummy aches, we were instructed by our guides and hotel signs, almost without exception, to drink only bottled water (both Hong Kong and Thailand). |
