THE OLD GARDENER

You are visitor

[Master Gardener Logo] A separate and distinct area of gardening is that of the Master Gardener - the voluntary arm of the Agricultural Extension Services. As a Past President and member of the Harris County Master Gardener Association (Houston, Texas), I am more familiar with the Texas Master Gardener program but Master Gardening is nationwide in scope and on this page I will be attempting to put it all together.

I am often asked the question, "Who and what are 'Master Gardeners'"? The following comments, questions and answers are geared primarily to the Texas Master Gardener Program. However, with slight differences, they also apply to all 50 states since all now have "Master Gardener Programs". They also generally apply in the four Canadian provinces with the program except for the sponsorship of Cooperative Extension agencies.

Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticulture-related information to their communities.

Is the Master Gardener Program for You?

To help you decide if you should apply to be a Master Gardener, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I want to learn more about the culture and maintenance of many types of plants?
  • Am I eager to participate in a practical and intense training program?
  • Do I look forward to sharing my knowledge with people in my community?
  • Do I have enough time to attend training and to complete the volunteer service?

If you answered yes to these questions, the Master Gardener program could be for you. Contact your local Extension office to see if there is a Master Gardener Program in your county; not all counties have one. If there is a program, obtain an application from the Master Gardener Coordinator at that office.

Training

If accepted into the Master Gardener program in your county, you will attend a Master Gardener training course. In Texas, classes are taught by Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service specialists, staff, and local experts.

The program offers a minimum of 50 hours of instruction that covers topics including lawn care; ornamental trees and shrubs; insects, disease, and weed management; soils and plant nutrition; vegetable gardening; home fruit protection; garden flowers; and water conservation. The training is offered at various times during the year at various locations across the state. Check with your County Extension office for specific locations, dates, and times.

Volunteer Commitment

In exchange for training, participants are asked to volunteer time to their County Extension program. At least 50 hours of volunteer service within one year following the training is required to earn the title of "Texas Master Gardener."

The type of service done by Master Gardeners varies according to community needs, and the abilities and interests of the Master Gardeners. Some Master Gardeners answer telephone requests for information related to gardening. Others staff plant clinics or displays in shopping malls or community centers. Master Gardeners may speak to local groups and conduct workshops. They may help establish community garden projects, work with 4-H youth, or assist their agent with news or radio releases related to gardening. The Master Gardener Coordinator in the County Extension office decides how volunteer time can be best utilized.

Texas Master Gardeners are representatives of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. In all volunteer work related to the program, Master Gardeners follow the research-based recommendations of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. The title of "Texas Master Gardener" can be used by volunteers only when engaged in Extension Service-sponsored activities.

Certification

Participants become certified Master Gardeners after they have completed the training course and fulfilled their volunteer commitment.

To get information on Master Gardening activities in your own area contact your local County Extension Agent.

Harris County, Texas Master Gardener Training

In Houston, Texas, applications for the Master Gardener Class by calling (281)855-5600 or writing (or visiting) the Texas Agricultural Extension Service at 3033 Bear Creek Drive, Houston, Texas 77084-3578. This is in Bear Creek Park, north of Patterson between Eldridge and Hwy 6. There are a minimum of two classes per year, one beginning on the last Thursday of August and the other beginning the last Thursday in January. These classes are taught on twelve (12)consecutive Thursdays from about 9:00 am until 3:00pm. Additional classes are taught at Mercer Arboretum and at Precinct 2 in Southeast Harris County.

After completion of class training, trainees are required to donate a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer service, not working in a paid capacity. Of these, at least 48 hours must be served on the Master Gardener Telephone Hotline answering telephone calls related to gardening. This is probably one of the most effective part of the training because many of these calls will require some research from the excellent horticultural library maintained in the Master Gardener Room. In addition, assistance is available from the County Agent on call for the particular day. These phone sessions are from 9:00 am until 3:00pm, one day a week for two months. Additional volunteer hours are arranged with the program coordinator.

Upon completion of training and volunteer hours, class members attend a graduation dinner and are awarded certificates conferring upon them the title "Master Gardener". In order to retain this title, each Master Gardener is required to donate a certain number of volunteer hours and to attain a certain number of hours of advanced training each year.

Upon graduation, each Master Gardener is elgible for in the Harris County Master Gardener Association. Only certified "Master Gardeners" are elgible for membership in this organization

My own membership is with Harris County (Houston, Texas) Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) which now numbers over 930 members and is growing fast. At present, I'm attempting to keep up the HCMGA website also, so give it a visit. Among other things are on-line copies of our monthly newsletter "Urban Dirt". This is an electronic version (.pdf file) of the paper copy and is affectionately called "eDirt). Of course, .pdf files require Acrobat Reader to open them, but this is a free program and can be dowlnloaded from the Urban Dirt Page.

Although the Master Gardener Program began in the State of Washington in 1972, the movement has spread and today is found in one form or another in all 50 states of the United States and four provinces in Canada. So far I've been able to find Internet Addresses for 49 of the 50 states lacking only Hawaii although I know that they do have a program. I have found sites in all four (4) Canadian provinces with programs. Since I only have one address for some states I will appreciate receiving any web addresses of pages that deal with Master Gardener Activities so that I can add them to the list.

"They then help others through community service. This zealous group is known as master gardeners. They are some of the greatest people on earth and many of the best gardeners in Utah."
