Intermediate Network Design

There are a lot of new technologies that have come about in the past few years, one of which being wireless networks. Different wireless networks operate on different frequencies, however these frequencies are also used by some portable phones. The 802.11b and 802.11g standards run on 2.4ghz and the 802.11a is on 5ghz. If you are considering purchasing a wireless access point of some kind then make sure that you don't own any phones that operate in the same frequency range.

The following example network shows a couple of computers connected directly to a router/wireless access point and a desktop computer and 2 laptops associated with wireless. This wireless desktop could be a couple of rooms away, or upstairs, saving you time and effort in running Ethernet cable through the walls and attic. The wireless feature built into many of the new laptops makes life easier as well. Why would you sit at a desk and check your email and drink a cup of coffee in the morning when you can lay in bed :-) ? You could even do work on your company laptop from home while watching the evening news.

Dont forget to set up some security features on your wireless network! See the Wireless AP Security portion of this site as well.
