HALNet ADSL FAQ
How do I know if I qualify for HALNet ADSL?
- You must have an AT&T phone line.
- You must be located within the Houston LATA
- Your distance from your phone company central office and the nature and quality of your phone lines will determine whether you can use ADSL. We have an ADSL tech on staff, who will check to see if you qualify. Call us at 713-993-3300 Monday - Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Does HALNet ADSL offer STATIC IP Addresses?
- YES, we offer STATIC IP Addresses. The charge is $10.00/mo for the FIRST STATIC IP Address and $5.00/mo for each ADDITIONAL STATIC IP Address.
How many computers does HALNet allow per ADSL account?
- We allow up to 3 IP Addresses per account.
- AT&T/Yahoo! only allows 1 IP Address per account at their promotional rate! To connect with more than one computer at a time with AT&T/Yahoo! ADSL, you must purchase a router and pay a higher fee.
I'm changing from another ADSL provider - can I use my existing ADSL modem with HALNet?
- This depends on the equipment. Contact our ADSL tech at 713-993-3300, Monday - Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and be prepared to give us the make and model of your current equipment.

- PLEASE NOTE: If you are STILL UNDER CONTRACT to another provider, they may charge you termination fees.
I don't want to install my own equipment. Can I get someone to install it for me?
- Upon customer request, HAL-PC will provide professional installation of the ADSL equipment on an exisiting line for a $200 charge.
- Remember!! If you are switching from an AT&T/Yahoo! DSL account, all you need to do is give us a signed authorization and we can make the switch with no futher action on your part. You can upgrade equipment whenever it is convenient for you.
What are some of the differences between HALNet ADSL service and AT&T/Yahoo!s ADSL?
- AT&T/Yahoo! forces you to use PPPoE. PPPoE makes your "always-on" ADSL internet connection act like a dial-up modem connection, where you have to make a connection each time you want to start using the internet. HALNet does not force you to do this because we do not make you use PPPoE. Your HALNet connection is TRULY always on.
- AT&T/Yahoo! only allows you 1 IP Address per ADSL account, so you can only connect 1 computer - unless you set up a router and pay a higher fee. HALNet allows you 3 IP Addresses at its regular rates, so you can connect 3 computers without having to bother with a router.
- AT&T/Yahoo! has outsourced most of its technical support to offshore companies. You never know who you will be speaking to or how expert they will be. HALNet's technical support personnel are located in the HAL offices in the Galleria area - you can walk in and speak to them personally if you need to!
- AT&T/Yahoo! does not support Unix/Linux/FreeBSD operating systems. HALNet DOES!
Can I make a phone call or send a fax while I'm on the Internet with ADSL.
- Yes you can. ADSL is "piggybacked" on to a regular phone line, so you can still make a phone call or send a fax over that line while your are using the ADSL part of the line to access the Internet.
