Group meetingSIG Announcements

Any HAL-PC member can propose the formation of a new SIG. However running a successful SIG is a serious commitment. If you want to start a SIG you should recognize and plan for this from the start.

HAL-PC provides its SIGs with basic resources, including:

  • A meeting room equipped with projector and computer.
  • Listings on the HAL-PC web site and in the Magazine to promote the SIG.
  • An administrative account on HALNet to facilitate communication with the SIG leader and space for a web page to promote the SIG.

The other elements necessary to the success of a SIG must be provided by the Leader and members of the SIG themselves. These include:

  • TIME, TIME and more TIME! In addition to conducting scheduled SIG meetings significant time is required to prepare presentations or recruit others to do so.
  • KNOWLEDGE RESOURCES. Much of a SIG's success depends on how well it presents relevant information to its members and facilitates the exchange of information between members. The SIG Leader, outside presenters or the members themselves can present this information.
  • SPECIALIZED SOFTWARE or HARDWARE. HAL-PC provides only a basic computer setup with the Windows OS and Office97. If you need to run specialized software, the best option is to bring in your own laptop or PC and hook it up to the "guest" computer stations available in SIG Rooms A, B and C.
  • INVOLVED MEMBERS. Ultimately the success of a SIG is dependent on the level of commitment it draws from its members. A small SIG with a dedicated core group of members can be every bit as successful as a SIG with many more members.
