Setting Up Thunderbird

Please note: This is the only support for Thunderbird. These screen shots are based on Thunderbird version 2 but may apply to other versions as well. There are many different browsers, Email programs, and even newsreaders. But current members of the volunteer staff are familiar with only Outlook, Outlook Express and the Netscape (4.xx series) for setup and troubleshooting. See: this article from the HAL-PC Magazine for a discussion of using different web (or email) programs.

New Account

When you install Thunderbird and first start it, you should get an email set-up screen similar to Figure 1.

NOTE: If the New Account Setup program (Figure 1) did not start, open Thunderbird and click on TOOLS, ACCOUNT SETTINGS, then ADD ACCOUNT.

NOTE: If the account has already been set-up and changes need to be made, go to Figure 8 and follow the instructions to set-up or confirm your email settings.

Put the dot in “Email account”. Click NEXT.

Your Name

Enter your name in the “Your Name” box. This can be any name you want the people you send Emails to see you as. See Figure 2.

Click in the “Email Address” box and enter your HALNet e-mail address. Click NEXT.

Account Type

The type of sever is POP (or POP3).

The Incoming server name is: pop.hal-pc.org

The Outgoing server name is: smtp.hal-pc.org

Make sure the information is like the above "Server Information" picture. See Figure 3.

Note: if the screen seen in Figure 3 does NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check to make sure “smtp.hal-pc.org” is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) shown in Figure 6. Also you will need to examine Figures 10 & 11 to make sure “smtp.hal-pc.org” is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) boxes. Simply continue with these instructions to the end.

The Incoming and Outgoing User Names are your HALNet username (your full email address). See Figure 4.

NOTE!! If you are calling in using the National Access Numbers, you MUST use the FULL email address as the user name.

Click NEXT.

Account Name

You may put in a name here if you wish to describe your account. However, you can simply click NEXT and proceed. See Figure 5.

Here you can examine your account settings to see if correct. If not, you may click the BACK button to go back and correct a mistake. See Figure 6.

If all looks OK, then click FINISH.

Note: if the screen seen in Figure 3 did NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check here to make sure “smtp.hal-pc.org” is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) box shown in Figure 6. Whether it is, or is not, you will need to examine Figures 10 & 11 to make sure “smtp.hal-pc.org” is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) boxes. Simply continue with these instructions to the end.

When you have an internet connection, and you try to check your mail, it will ask for the password. See Figure 7.

Once the correct password has been entered, your email should be set.

You are finished.

Note: It is suggested that you use "Plain Text" for sending your Emails. Uncheck the box that says,”Compose messages in HTML format.” See Figure 12.

NOTE: If the account has already been set-up and changes need to be made, use the following instructions to set-up or confirm your email settings.

Open Thunderbird and click on TOOLS and then ACCOUNT SETTINGS. See Figure 8.

The Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings box should re-appear with your newly added account. Click on “Server Settings” in the box on the left (if needed, click the arrow by your account name to show the list). See Figure 9.

Make sure the “Server Name” box has pop.hal-pc.org and that your username is in the “User Name” box (please user your FULL email address as the username).

NOTE!! If you are calling in using the National Access Numbers, you MUST use the FULL email address as the user name.

If you are only using HALNet and Netscape to get your mail, click “Set as Default.”

It is suggested that you set “Check for new messages every” to 30 minutes or more.

Note: do not worry about the “Local Directory” information located at the bottom of the screen since it is preset by Netscape and your PC.

Outgoing Server Settings

Check that your “Outgoing Server SMTP” has information similar to the above. See Figure 10.

The outgoing server name is: smtp.hal-pc.org

NOTE: your screen may look slightly different, possibly having items rearranged differently in the left box.

NOTE: if the screen seen in Figure 4 did NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check here to make sure “smtp.hal-pc.org” is in the “Server Name” box. If you still have problems sending, click on the ADVANCED button and examine what is in the Advanced Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings box. Proceed to Figure 11.

In the “Edit (Advanced) Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings” box see if you have any other information such as another ISP or incorrect information. See Figure 11.

See that the server name is: smtp.hal-pc.org and your username is in the “User Name” box (please user your FULL email address as the username).

If necessary, make smtp.hal-pc.org the default Outgoing Server.

Once done, click OK.

Click the category “Composition and Addressing”

Here you can make changes to the way you send emails. It is suggested that you use "Plain Text" for sending your Emails. Uncheck the box that says,”Compose messages in HTML format.” See Figure 12.

Finished.

If you still cannot send or receive HAL-PC (HALNet) email you should try removing the account and creating a new one. See Figures 9 &10 and you will see a “Remove Account” button to remove accounts.
