Configuring Mozilla 1.x

Please note: This is the only support for Mozilla. These screen shots are based on Mozilla version 1.4 but may apply to other versions as well. There are many different browsers, Email programs, and even newsreaders. But current members of the volunteer staff are familiar with only Internet Explorer and Netscape (4.xx series) for setup and troubleshooting. See: http://www.hal-pc.org/journal/oct02/Email/email/email.html for a discussion of using different web programs.

Open Mozilla and click on EDIT and then PREFERENCES. See Figure 1.

Preferences will open to the "Navigator" category. See Figure 2.

Here you can set your homepage to www.hal-pc.org (or the address of your choice).

Proceed to the "History" category.

Click on HISTORY located under NAVIGATOR on the left side.

Here you can also clear your HISTORY and your LOCATION BAR's recently typed in web addresses. See Figure 3.

To clear your history of previously viewed web pages, click the "Clear History" button (once this is done it may turn gray and unavailable).

To clear the Location Bar of typed in web pages, click the "Clear Location Bar" button (once this is done it may turn gray and unavailable).

Proceed to the "Advanced" category.

Click on "Advanced" in the box on the left (if needed, click the arrow by Advanced to show the list) then click "Cache." See Figure 4.

Here you can also clear your Disk Cache of recently visited web pages.

Click the "Clear Cache" button to clear visited web pages from your hard drive.

NOTE: the Disk Cache size is set to 50 megs by default. This is considered large by some. You might consider lowering this to 10 megs. As an example, Netscape 4.7x has default settings of: 7 megs (7680k) for Disk Cache.

Proceed to "Mail and Newsgroups" category. Click on the arrow located to the left of "Mail & Newsgroups" to open it.

Click on "Send Format". Here you can make changes to the way you send emails. It is suggested that you choose "Plain Text" for sending your Emails. See Figure 5.

In Mozilla, click on the menu item "Window" then move down and click "Mail & Newsgroups". See Figure 6.

This takes you to the Email program of Mozilla.

Important Note: If this is the first time you are setting up the email account, an Account Wizard, "New Account Setup" box may appear. If so, proceed to Figure 9.

Click on "Edit" then "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings". See Figure 7.

Click "Add Account" to make a new email account for HALNet. See Figure 8.

NOTE: your screen may look slightly different, possibly having "Local Folders" in the left box.

Click "Email Account." See Figure 9.

Click NEXT.

b Enter your name in the "Your Name" box. This can be any name you want the people you send Emails to see you as. See Figure 10.

Click in the "Email Address" box and enter your HALNet e-mail address.

Once done, click NEXT.

Both Incoming and Outgoing servers are: mail.hal-pc.org

Make sure the information is like the above "Server Information" picture. See Figure 11.

Note: if the screen seen in Figure 11 does NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check to make sure "mail.hal-pc.org" is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) shown in Figure 14. Also you will need to examine Figure 16 to make sure "mail.hal-pc.org" is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) box. Simply continue with these instructions to the end.

Once done, click NEXT

The User Name is your HALNet username (your username is the first part of your email address before the @ sign). Please note: you MAY use the full email address as your user name if you wish. See Figure 12.

NOTE!! If you are calling in using the National Access Numbers, you MUST use the FULL email address as the user name.

You may put in a name here if you wish to describe your account. However, you can simply click NEXT and proceed. See Figure 13.

Here you can examine your account settings to see if correct. If not, you may click the BACK button to go back and correct a mistake. See Figure 14.

If all looks OK, then click FINISH.

Note: if the screen seen in Figure 11 did NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check here to make sure "mail.hal-pc.org" is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) box shown in Figure 14. Whether it is, or is not, you will need to examine Figure 16 to make sure "mail.hal-pc.org" is in the Outgoing Server Name (SMTP) box. Simply continue with these instructions to the end.

The Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings box should re-appear with your newly added account. Click on "Server Settings" in the box on the left (if needed, click the arrow by your account name to show the list). See Figure 15.

Make sure the "Server Name" box has mail.hal-pc.org and that your username is in the "User Name" box (your username is the first part of your email address before the @ sign).

NOTE!! If you are calling in using the National Access Numbers, you MUST use the FULL email address as the user name.

If you are only using HALNet and Mozilla to get your mail, click "Set as Default."

It is suggested that you set "Check for new messages every" to 16 minutes or more.

Note: do not worry about the "Local Directory" information located at the bottom of the screen since it is preset by Mozilla and your PC.

Proceed to Outgoing Server (SMTP).

Check that your "Outgoing Server SMTP" has information similar to the above. See Figure 16.

NOTE: your screen may look slightly different, possibly having items rearranged differently in the left box.

NOTE: if the screen seen in Figure 11 did NOT have an Outgoing Server box, you will need to double check here to make sure "mail.hal-pc.org" is in the "Server Name" box. If you still have problems sending, click on the ADVANCED button and examine what is in the Advanced Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings box. Proceed to Figure 17.

In the "Advanced Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings" box see if you have any other information such as another ISP or incorrect information. See Figure 17.

If necessary, make mail.hal-pc.org the default Outgoing Server.

Once done, click OK.

Click OK again.

You are now finished setting up Web and Mail.

If you still cannot send or receive HAL-PC (HALNet) email you should try removing the account and creating a new one. See Figure 16 and you will see a "Remove" button to remove accounts.

If Mozilla is closed then open Mozilla, and click on EDIT and then PREFERENCES.

Click on "Privacy & Security" in the category box on the left (if needed, click the arrow by Privacy & Security to show the list) then click "Cookies." See Figure 18.

Here you can change your cookie handling.

For more privacy with cookies, you might consider placing the dot by "Enable cookies for the originating web site only."

Click on "Popup Windows" in the category box on the left. See Figure 19.

Here you can add the ability to reduce Popup windows while you browse the internet.

For more control, you might consider placing the check by "Block unrequested popup windows."

Click OK.
