Setting Up Outlook Express 4 and Outlook 2000

NOTE: Screen shots are from Outlook Express 4. Screens from later versions, including Outlook 2000 may look slightly different, but the information you need to enter remains the same.

Open Outlook Express.

If the "Help" wizard appears, you may close it. If necessary click on the INBOX . The above screen should be shown. See Figure 1.

If the Internet Wizard starts then go to Figure 5, the "Your Name" dialog box.

Click on Tools, Accounts. See Figure 2.

Then click on the Mail tab. See Figure 3.

In the Internet Accounts box, click on MAIL. See Figure 3. If this is the first time Outlook Express is being set up, a setup wizard will appear and ask you questions such as your name, your email address, etc.

If another account is in the box that is not being used, or if you are "resetting" your account in Outlook, then remove the account and once the Internet Accounts box is blank (as in the above example) click ADD then MAIL. See Figure 4.

Then the Internet Connection Wizard will start. Follow the screenshots that follow.

Enter your name here. This can be any name you want the people you send Emails to see you as. See Figure 5.

Once done, click NEXT.

Click "I already have an e-mail address I'd like to use" and enter your HALNet e-mail address. See Figure 6.

Once done, click NEXT.

Make sure the information is like the above "E-mail Server Names" picture. See Figure 7.

Once done, click NEXT.

Make sure the information is like the above "Internet Mail Logon" picture with your information. See Figure 8.

The POP Account Name is your username (your username your Email address).

In Password, put in your HALNet password.

Click NEXT.

You may put in a name here if you wish to describe your account. However, you can simply click NEXT and proceed. See Figure 9.

If you have a dial-up connection (modem) click "Connect using my phone line." See Figure 10. Note: If you have ADSL, click "Connect using my local area network (LAN)".

If you have more than one Internet Provider, make sure that HALNet (or whatever your HALNet connection is called) is highlighted (i.e. blue) by clicking on it. See Figure 11.

Click FINISH

The new account should now be added. See Figure 13. Click CLOSE on this box and then close Outlook Express. Reopen Outlook Express and send yourself an Email to test your system.

Note: If you are experiencing disconnects whenever you check your Email, then continue.

 

If you are experiencing odd disconnects whenever you check your Email, then check the following.

Click on Tools, Options. See Figure 14.

If you would like to have your E-Mail checked for automatically, then put a check in the "Check for new messages every 16 minutes(s). See Figure 15.

When finished with this dialog box, then Click on the Dial Up tab.

Make sure "Dial this connection:" and your HALNet dial-up is selected. See Figure 16.

Make sure "Hang up when finished sending, receiving, or downloading" is not checked or it will hang up after checking mail. See Figure 16.

Click on the Spelling tab.

You may also wish to check "Always check spelling before sending". See Figure 17.

It is suggested that you choose "Plain Text" for sending your Emails. See Figure 18.

Click APPLY to force the changes immediately, and then press OK to close the box.
