"Last Saturday evening about 8 o'clock Mr. J. E. Spradley of Patsburg was crushed to death by the train. Mr. Spradley had gone over to the postoffice for his mail, and having obtained it, he, in the company with Mr. Ham, started for home. Just as they were crossing the switch they discovered the train near them & moving with considerable speed. Mr. Ham remarked that they would have to cross hurriedly and leaping from the track, barely made his escape while Mr. Spradley was struck by the rear car and crushed beneath its merciless wheels and he died within an hour after the accident. Deceased was buried at Live Oak last Sunday evening attended by a large crowd of relatives and friends. He leaves a wife and one child, a son to whom he was a kind and affectionate husband and father."

35. Bryant Eugene SPRADLEY [image] (Bryant , James , Bryant , Andrew ) was born on 20 Feb 1833. He died on 11 Mar 1908 in Bertram (Burnet Co.) TX. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetary - Milam Co., TX.

On the 1860 census of Butler County, AL Bryant Eugene indicated 'Georgia' was his place of birth. This would have been when the family was migrating from Camden, Kershaw County, SC to Arcadia, Montgomery County, AL where they arrived about 1834. This was a farming family consisting of the parents, Bryant Spradley and wife Frances "Fannie" Payne, five sons and three daughters, Bryant Eugene being the eighth child. Two sons and two daughters were then born in Montgomery Co., AL. On the 1860 census, in Butler Co., he is shown as a single man, farmer, living near James John Spradley, his cousin. About this time he met and married Amelia Ann Todd, sister of James John's wife.

Bryant Eugene Spradley was an overseer (interpreted by some as 'slave' overseer) for several plantations, including the one owned by his eventual father-in-law Willoughby Todd. Bryant Eugene was administrator of Todd's estate. After Amelia died, he married her sister Emaline. Lifelong Mason. Served in the Civil War CSA. Enlisted Butler Co., AL. Received the Iron Cross Honor for bravery under fire. Returned home after the war, discovered wife, mother, and father-in-law had died. He was appointed guardian of his wife's siblings and cousin James John Spradley's children.

Bryant Eugene joined the Masonic Order at Matasulga, Lodge #119. He later affiliated with the Helicon Lodge 201 in Crenshaw Co., AL and received his M.M. on October 2, 1859. He affiliated with Collirene Lodge #362 (Alabama) on Feb 18, 1869 and ws elected Tyler on June 30, 1869. He last reported to Rockdale Lodge #414 (Texas) in 1907.

Bryant Eugene served bravely and honorably in the Civil War. Records show him in the 58th regiment 2nd Battalion, 13th brigade, 11th division, Alabama Militia. A letter from Department of the Army, Office of the Adjutant General, Washington, D.C. 29 Oct. 1952 confirmed that the records show that Bryant E. Spradley, a private of Company A 4th Battalion, Hilliard's Alabama Artillery, enlisted 11 May 1862 at Greenville, Alabama. He was elected 2nd Lieutenanat on Feb. 19, 1864.

Union Prisoner of War Records show that he was captured April 3, 1865 at Amelia Court House, VA and was held prisoner at Maryland, Old Capitol Prison, Washinbgton, D.C. and Johnson's Island, Ohio where he was released June 20, 1865. He told his children about this capture, and the prisons that he was in, and how it snowed in the Johnson's Island, Ohio prison in June prior to his release.

Bryant Eugene was wounded and received the Iron Cross Honor for bravery under fire. He told his children the following story. He was hit with a muzzle load miniball bullet and no one believed that the ball was still in his head. He received first aid the first time he went tothe hospital, and sent back to camp. He later went AWOL so he could go back to the hospital. The hospital authorities refused him at first but he told them to take him or they could haul him off because he wasn't going anywhere else. After convincing a doctor to probe for a bullet, one-half of a mini ball was found and the doctor was amazed.

When Bryant Eugene got home from prison after the War he found that his wife had died, his mother had died, and his father-in-law died October 17, 1865. He was appointed guardian of his son, Augustus D. Spradley, and his wife's minor brothers and sisters under age 14 and still at home. He was also appointed guardian of Clayton Louis Pinkerton Webster Spradley and his brother James Willoughby Spradley, children of his wife's sister Penelopy "Penny" Frances Todd, and husband James John Spradley, his cousin. Minutes of Probate Court on August 13, 1866 in Lowndes Co, AL show him to be Guradian for Robert M. Todd, Mary Todd, Louis P.W. Spradley, James W. Spradley, Augustus D. Spradley, John F. Todd, Cass A. Todd, Thomsas J. Todd, and Emaline Spradley.

About 1867 one of the Josiah Todd children (Martha Todd Blaylock, sister of Willoughby Todd) and three grandchildren (Ursula Blaylock, John C. Blaylock, and Willis Grice) had immigrated to Texas, John C. Blalock, a son of Martha Todd Blalock, wrote a letter on November 6, 1871 to his uncle John O. Todd in Alabama about the conditions in Milam Co., TX. They had "made a good crop, corn selling at $.75 to $1, bacon $.10 or more, flour at $7.50 to $10 per barrel and large, fat beeves $10 per head, stock cattle $5 and horse (house?) property is tolerby cheap." "Land has advanced some in this part, but plenty of vacant land higher up the country that can be preempted for homestead, 160 acres free of charge except of fees. A few words to cousin BE (Bryant Eugene Spradley)... he can see the above prices and I would be glad if he and all that want to come to come. Cousin, you'll want a way bill from New Orleans to Galveston, thence to Houston, thence to Giddings, thence by ox wagon to Millerton, by Lexington. Giddings is about the nearest depot to me, about 28 miles."

In the fall of 1872 it seems that Bryant Eugene and his immediate family, and many of his wife's sister's and brother's (and several others of the family) decided to migrate to Texas. Bill Spradley, brother of Bryant Eugene, along with Jiles Summerlin and a cousin (Mr. McCall), left Collerene Hill by wagons to go to Selma, AL. Some had to walk. They went down the river to Mobile, AL and across the Gulf of Mexico to Galveston where they arrived on Christmas Eve about 11:00 p.m.on December 24, 1872. The name of the ship was the Mary Susan, of the Morgan Line. The number of people in this migration has been said to be 28. They had made arrangements for a Mr. Blaylock from Milam County to meet them with oxen and carts in Galveston to carry their goods. They walked to Lee County, and lived there until 1884. They then went to Coryell County, and then to Milam County in the fall of 1885, where Bryant bought 600 acres of land. He had bought 200 acres in Lee county from Lewis Shaw in December of 1879, but sold it to L.G. Landis in 1882. The 600 acre farm bought in Milam county in 1885 was where old Gardner, Texas was located.
