    Tips
Note: These tips are for experienced users of Windows. And as always, use extreme caution when editing the registry.

      Clean-up and Maintenance

Keep Viruses, Spyware, Adware, and Trojans out of your computer.

      Review this check list:

      • Use an antivirus program and keep it updated.
      • Use firewalls, hardware and software.
      • Run the Disk Clean-Up utility weekly.
      • Run Scandisk and Defrag in Safe Mode on Win9X machines.
      • In XP run "CHKDSK /F" from a command prompt. It will ask you to reboot.
      • In XP run "Defrag" at least once a week.
      • Run and update the latest version of Adaware once a week.
      • Run and update the latest version of SypBot once a week.
      • Use CCleaner to -
        a. Remove temporary files.
        b. Clear the Recent File list
        c. Delete Temporary Internet Cache and Recent History
        d. Clean the Registry
        e. Remove unwanted or resource hogging programs at startup.
      • Delete unwanted Installed Programs
      • Remove unwanted programs that run in the background
      • Use a backup and recovery system and test it.
      • Use SmartSniffer to monitor your network connections.
      • Use NetworkMagic to configure and manage your network.
      -------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer: You should have a current backup of your computer's data. The removal of files can lead to lost data or system problems and ESPECIALLY if the wrong files are deleted, could ruin your operating system. You may then have to "Format and Re-Install" Windows if the situation is bad enough. Even deleting the intended files can sometimes lead to oddities if the system experiences a glitch. You do the Clean-up at your own risk. So, make sure you have a backup of your data in the event something goes wrong.
