Steve Gilligan: Self Relations interview

and facial mask induction

SG: Describe for me what it is.

JS: My nose is as if someone had turned a tap on. I sneeze, I get an itch inside my ears, my nose is bad today.

SG: This... it... that you would somehow like to reduce... is it primarily the experience of those symptoms or...

JS: I’ve wondered how about I could feel in relation to the symptoms. When they are around, I don’t feel OK ..it’s bloody irritating.... it’s disruptive.

SG: What… when it shows up, when it visits your body, can you tell me where you feel least OK?

JS: A twitching inside at the top… the tap gets turned on.

SG: I would sense that it has been quite a struggle for you. I am trying to sense in terms of when and where it moves from a terrible inconvenience?... also where you start losing some connection with yourself at the same time, when it moves from an inconvenience to being a problem?

JS: it’s waking me up in the night....when it invades me in some way...so I can cope with mild symptoms. I’d prefer to be free... there’s a kind of threshold.

SG: So if I could just again slow this down a little bit. In my own line of questioning, thinking in terms of a funny thing happens on the way to J becoming more of who she is..... and I am trying to think in a moment to moment process in this pattern. So I hear you say something wakes you up, sort of the pains and aches of the physical allergy…

JS: Yes a tickle..

SG: and I say what happens next, if I were spying on you with a special video camera?

JS: Yes, the tickling sensation... like someone turns a tap on..

SG: what happens what are you experiencing it?

JS: Oh God...

SG: Oh God ....there’s anger comes through?

JS: When you said when Juliet loses Juliet, I wondered if she is not a part of me. I’ve had it so long, it’s so familiar...

SG: Yes, there’s a certain relationship that you would have to it. You can’t help but think at times... me being diabetic in terms of what that relationship is between the diabetes and the waking up in the middle of the night, which can happen in a cold sweat. I am curious in terms of... as you wake up in the "Oh God" that feeling of anger or distress... where in your body you most feel its presence?

JS: Here and my head feels there is something kind of here.

SG: If I were to ask you to just let a number come into your mind that represents age, what age...

JS: The one that came was four and as a child ostensibly..

SG: And what, can you tell me what happens to that feeling there as you get the number four?

JS: It has spread and settled...

SG: Uh Uh.... so she’s four...

LONG PAUSE

SG: Can you tell me, and how old are you?

JS: 35

SG: In terms of your experience of where just where things are more centered and localized in terms of living at 35, where do you find yourself listening from and organising at 35 ... and WHO is this person looking at me from behind your eyes?

JS: Maybe 35 maybe 4 ... I don't know right now...

SG: One of the nice things about hypnosis is that you begin to enjoy that there really are two of you and it’s a wonderful experience to know that you can enjoy both at the same time. Somebody was pointing out in some ways you never lose any ages you just add TO ages, so you never stop being ONE you just add TWO TO ONE then you add three, then you add four and so forth. That’s a very curious ..... to be both four and 35 at the same

time and can you SENSE that? What’s that like?

JS: Me...

SG: and on a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you feel the connection between them, what number came into your mind?

JS: about a 3… I have them in parallel..

SG: It’s an interesting thing that the 4 year old doesn’t even know that the 35 year old exists.... now she’s a relative newcomer (laughter) Certainly not be thinking, does she know your presence. Do you believe in telepathy? not necessarily in the Wooo Wooo sense, "I feel somebody is having a thought in this room", but I feel something

can be passed between people...And I’m wondering what it might be like to be CURIOUS about a sense of telepathy developing between the two of you.

Long Pause

So if I might just make a comment to the group...there is a pattern of saying that there is a two and the ability to have a feel, a sense of the two different selves, particularly the feeling of connection.. It develops a nice kind of a trance, not dependent on the phenomena of trance, but opening up the experience of self as a relationship.

JS: it is just that experience before was of two parallels and this time like an egg... an elliptical connection and I wonder what effect that will have but it’s there.

SG: And just notice as you stated that, what happened to the connection between them...

JS: it strengthened a little.

SG; OK, can you tell me what she is doing right now (gut self)

JS: The 4 year old one feels a little livelier or stronger and my sense is that it is coming more from here than the connection, she is lower and the 35 is higher. It gets weaker nearer the top.

SG: It’s really not her problem, is it?

JS: laughter

SG: and in terms of the whole process of learning how to be with.... usually in a blaming... if only your unconscious would get with it. I don’t feel, don’t think critically this is something you should immediately change. This is a point of observing with a gentleness to yourself... your own willingness or lack thereof to be with her and kind of... how easy it is to join a certain tradition that was once established to not be with her - or to be with her only when she behaves herself, only when she is doing something impressive and good. I would just like to shift to a slightly different question, would that be OK? Can you tell me who is controlling your facial muscles?

JS: chuckle, I don’t think I know and I think it may be the 4 year old.

S: Do you realize that someone other than you is controlling your facial muscles?… it’s kind of funny when you begin to think about it, starting with you or, really anybody, that the way that one looks, the way that one experiences looking away, looking at me or smiling… in a sense has at least a semi-automatic factor in there, that you are not really in a deliberate or fully conscious way controlling your facial muscles. Which is funny, because there are something like 150 muscles in your face and 90 per cent of the emotion transmitted comes through the face, and that emotion comes from a very deep hard-wired place in your gut…. and so it might make some difference in terms of giving some sense of who is controlling those facial muscles?… and how they can get configured in various patterns?… a mask if you will… and how our consciousness gets projected into the mask… and in a way we get caught up in how we are reacting to something rather than feeling out of curiosity, straight from the belly, the gut, for the first time. Another way of thinking about how to go into a trance without having to go into the patterns of trance….. we’re going into the learning curiosity of t r a n c e. One possibility that one might imagine, just for this sake of experimentation, is to feel your face as a certain sort of facial mask. Just feel a kind of gentle sensing behind the mask, including your eyes and the muscles in your eyes. So you just kind of take your awareness and project it away by getting inside of the muscles of the eye… the same I am just suggesting… What would be an experiment is to gently feel behind your eyes in a gentle and precise way…. to look at the muscles of your eye from behind the eyes… to see the muscles as they mask the facial mask, and just gently from behind the mask, and gently pulling your awareness behind…and gently watching the precise, alert and yet fully relaxed and gentle place that your mask is operating… in certain fixed attitudes… And you begin to think about the allergies, her four year old… it is very easy to observe… one has caught an attitude about who she is, what should be done, what the experience is in terms of discovering what should be done, hasn’t been done and so forth. You might want to open it up by even feeling that it’s almost like electrodes or strings attached to the sides of the mask, attached to sort of protoplasmic blobs that represent certain past experiences…. that conditioned you to respond, to react, to interpret certain experiences inside of you and certain experiences inside of others… with a fixed attitude. And there’s nothing wrong with that and it’s nice to know that in trance… And be able to FEEL GENTLY behind the mask and even watch how through the tension in the eyes, one tries to think of a solution, rather than follow the inner journey towards a solution, watching how the mask… one tries to be relaxed, open.. hypnotic… and just sensing and feeling,.. absorbing in a very gently precise way.. that the mask has developed a certain pattern of approaching the problem, a certain pattern of approaching relationships in some ways been automatized… and just feeling behind he mask, one can see the eyes just looking in a certain way physically. And yet one also…. when you are ready, can gently with the inner eyes, gently look downward even as the physical eyes may be looking outward and upward, to gently feel downward into the tremendous inner space inside………And when you look down towards the center… people experience that in different ways, so I don’t know what you will see as you gently look down ... within…. Some people discover a large beautiful body of water, just gazing down with a soft precise gentle mental perspective… behind the muscles…. and seeing a large body of water… and feeling the scene… just how one can be able to gently calm the surface of the water, to be curious about how that gentle mental experience of being with the surface of the water… allows one to experience calm, allows one to experience one’s moving beneath the surface, even while above in the gentle mental focus… you can watch the mask, the muscles of the eyes, the feelings of perspective opening and feeling beneath the surface to difference beings,… different forms of life in the underworld. The sense of a pattern of current that connects you with each form equally, and feeling the changing network, the building of new patterns of communication. At some points you will see and sense a disturbance in the water and you will notice that your ability to see and to sense and to be - neath the surface diminish you and they will tell you where you have been hurt before,… and yet the gentle mental sense of watching your mask, that gentle detachment from the reaction to a past experience, watching and being with and sensing beneath beneath the still calm surface, some other pattern, some other sense of a life network repairing itself. To be able to strengthen all the different networks through which the breath of life is able to pass through. What a nice thing to know that in a trance you can be able to sense that behind the mask…. a great experiment…. a great journey in consciousness….. and the world within… is possible. To discover and to learn to feel and to know… a return to old pattern having nothing to do with the images of the mind, having nothing to do with the thoughts of the historical sense… and the capacity to feel oneself… eyes open beneath the water.. seeing and sensing a pattern known long ago… and the old curiosity about the knowledge of both worlds, about the translator the transfusion about the whole pattern of an inner language, having nothing to do with the images of the mind. And at any point along the way, just coming back to a gentle mental precision of watching the mask relax and react, and just feeling the gentle kindness, in which you allow the mask to react precisely as it has learned, with a genteel curiosity about new possibilities, as well seeing old enemies and watching new responses. Sometimes watching the old response, but as sitting, watching a child learning. The gentle sensing of each response with the infusion of your own gentle presence, and along the way there is a nice sense of feeling where you are truly in a network of immunity and now in the first part of life, it is getting it out of the mind, and out into the world… and now starting the second half of life of bringing it out from the world into the presence of one being. And just the sensing of the space opened by the breath, from behind the mask, the curiosity of the breath… and the curiosity, how with each inhalation you can take now inside of the breath that which you once rejected, and breathing in and making room for within your own space, that which you rejected, and then when you breath out a sense of something… that allows you and brings you back to the beauty and the love of the world. And the inhalation… finding room right inside the breath, letting go of the muscular contraction, the curiosity of diffusing something… with that loving kindness of being with, finding a place inside of breathing… and then the breathing out a sense of something that reminds you that life is really incredibly beautiful. And the shifting sense of different possible relationships.. to whatever the it is. And whoever YOU are from behind the mask sensing YOU relating with it and her relating with you… and now the pattern moves through the entire circuit… and now much more easily. And something you can continue to be curious ... who is she anyway? And now that you have worked hard over 35 years for a sense of your own place in the world, a sense of discovering who you are on your own terms, a sense of discovering what you value with your own sense of self…it is a nice thing to discover that there is room to value her, to learn about who she is in all of her forms, trickster, lover, angry young warrior, in all of her many many forms…. and experiencing a trance is the enjoyment of feeling your attitude dissolve in a beautiful sense of emotional sobriety, begin to softly open up…. and when you are ready,…… and feel free to bring back both of you. It’s a nice thing to see both of them connected,…. your beauty as a person really comes forth,… can you feel that?
