Grades are of 3 types, daily and tests, and participation.
For the honors class each is worth:
For the regular class each is worth:
Tests: The total test grade is found by averaging all tests for the quarter. Since tests are only given at logical breaks in the material there will only be 2 to 3 tests per quarter. If a portion of a test is given as take-home problems, students may not discuss the problems with any other person. They are allowed to consult any books, or worksheets in doing take-home test problems. Students are allowed to bring in notes to any test on a 3 by 5 note card. They may write on both sides of the card. Students may use a full 8 1/2 by 11 inch cheat sheet , both sides, on the midterm or final exams.
After the test has been graded students will have an opportunity to correct the test for partial credit. Partial credit will be given if the student answers 3 questions for each wrong answer.
1. Tell what you were thinking to get it wrong.
2. Give the correct answer.
3. Explain or show why it is correct.
Daily: The daily grades are generally look like 10/10, 8/10 .... The total daily grade is found by dividing the sum of the numerators by the sum of the denominators and by multiplying the result by 100. Students are given a grade sheet that they can copy and use to figure their grades. Generally each worksheet in the book is worth 10 points. Students work on the sheets in class, and then finish some parts of the sheets at home as homework. Unless they are told that the work will be continued the next day, the worksheet is due the following day. The following day the homework will be stamped at the beginning of class to show how much was completed. Each group will be required to present part of the homework to the rest of the class. The homework will then be turned in at the end of the period. You earn up to 4 points for homework stamped at the bottom, and the rest of the 6 points for turning in the completed homework. Failure to turn in the homework will lose the 6 points. If you are absent on the day the homework is discussed, it is due the next day you come to school.
Late homework is subject to the department homework policy. It needs to be completed during lunch time department supervision. If late work is not submitted before a unit test, the student will complete homework rather than take the regular test. Instead they will take a makeup with more essay questions.
Lab reports will be worth more than 10 points. Some labs will have follow-up homework and will always be graded. Lab homework will be worth around 20 to 30 points. Lab homework is due 2 days after the completion of the lab.Absolutely No credit can be given work which is submitted after the due date.
Participation: Students will often be asked questions during class where they are required to answer by voting. Students who decline to answer these questions may have their participation grades lowered. Not preparing to present homework in class can also result in a lowered participation grade. At the end of the quarter students who have unexcused tardies or absences must have their quarter grade lowered by 2 points for each instance. This is done by lowering the participation grade by 10% for each deducted point.
