4. Claudius Geiger, son of Clement Laird Geiger and Matti E. Marshall, was born on 19 May 1888 in Greentree, Kentucky and died on 20 Oct 1956 in Watertown NY at age 68. The cause of his death was cancer. Another name for Claudius was Clay Clement.
Death Notes: He was living in Mannsville at the time with his family.
General Notes: He was Christened Claudius as his father was playing Claudius from Hamlet at the time. As an adult he used the name Clay Clement both on and off the stage, and eventually it was legalized through usage. He lived with his mother in Cincinnati until she died, then he was put into a boarding school.
Clay liked his first stepmother, and blamed Kathleen Kerrigan for breaking up his father's second marriage. He was never reconciled to Kathleen even though the studio tried to arrange a meeting between them. Clay and his father did not get along well. One time both he and his father were in the same town with different traveling companies. They happened to end up in the same restaurant, but neither would get up and greet the other.
Clay was a lifelong member of the Lambs club from his childhood. The Lambs is the oldest theatrical association in the world.
Clay was a leading man on broadway in the teens and 1920s. He opened in the title role in Captain Brassbund's Conversion by Shaw. George Kelley also wrote some plays for Clay including "Just Two Men". Clay also played in "The Torchbearers". He made some silent films in the East.
He played summer stock in the same company with such notables as the Barrymores and Sarah Bernhardt. In addition to acting he directed some plays. He also did some live television.
In 1920 he was in San Francisco and was the leading man opposite Belle Bennett. Belle had reputedly gotten her position as leading lady because she was a friend of Randolph Hearsts' mistress. Belle was hot for him, but he was a faithful husband, and a tiff resulted. He accused her of ruining his best suit with rouge (on stage), and she accused him of manhandling her during a fight scene. Her father allegedly swore a warrand for Clay's arrest, so they locked the theater during performances to prevent the summons from being served during the performances. The dispute was settled, and Clay returned to NY. The dispute was detailed in purple prose on the front page of the second section of the Examener.
During the 1930s he worked in Hollywood and was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild (Card #2). In the 1940s he again worked in NY and made some movies in NJ. He bought a house in Huntington, Long Island NY. Unfortunately he did not audition well, and as a result he was not able to able to get as many parts. All of the directors who knew him well had either retired or moved on to other things.
Clay was cremated, according to his wishes, and his ashes were mingled with those of his beloved wife.

General Notes: Mary was an actress and playwright. She ran away from home to go on the stage and returned with a husband. Her family insisted that she marry Clay before leaving home. Her mother once inquired what Clay did for a living, and asked why he was not going to work every day. He replied that he was between parts. She then asked why he could not get a steady job like a fireman or conductor.
Her first break was when George Kelly cast her as the lead in "Maggie the Magnificent". This was also where Jimmy Cagney and Joan Blondell had their debuts. While understudy for Crystal Hearn in "Craig's Wife" Mary wrote for the magazine "The Dominoes", which she was an associate editor. She played in summer stock with her husband.
She gave up the stage to save her marriage. Her only known movie is a grade B thriller made in 1933 "Night of Terror". It stars Bela Lugosi and Mary plays opposite him as his wife. The seance scene was filmed during an aftershock the day after the great Long Beach Earthquake. The actors had such good expressions as a result of the heavy lights jiggling over their heads that the director declared the first take perfect.
