Montgomery Ala Nov. 17 th 1859
Sister Margaret,
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes I rec'd your letter several days ago & would have answered sooner but I had just written a letter to Dr. Malloy & thought I would wait a few days as I knew you would here from us through his letter.
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes We were very sorry to hear of brother Duncan's sickness, but hope by this time he is entirely well. We are very anxious to hear from him & hope to get a letter tomorrow when I go to the office.
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes We are all in pretty good health & have been since we came except Charles, he is not dangerous. We have not had a Dr. to see him, he is better tonight & think we shall be able to prevent his chill tomorrow. My negroes still continue to have chills though not near so bad as in the fall but it interferes very much with gathering cotton & it is now getting late & cold. We have made good crops but shall hardly be able to gather them. I have about thirty five Bales gathered & Charles has over forty probably 45.
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes Margaret went to Lowndesboro soon after we arrived here & found all our friends there well. Harriet was & is right well she has grown a great deal since you saw her. We have not yet sent her to school nor have we exactly determined where we shall send her her Ma has her about ready & we shall determine soon, in a week or two. John & Bob have been very well all the time since we left. We are all at this time staying at Charles place. When Harriet goes to school Marg't will stay at Mr. G's until we get a place of our own. I took a short trip into Butler & Wilcox counties to look for land but did not find any for sale to suit. I am going to start off again tomorrow & shall probably go over into Marengo to see some land described to me by Mr. Polmitz, Will Gunters Father in law.
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes There has been a great stir in Montgomery this week. The Legislature met. The Agricultural Fair was held on Tuesday, Wednesday & today & the Fall Races tomorrow. The Synod of Ala meets tomorrow also. The Fair was a great show. I was there yesterday. I am glad you have commenced writing & hope you will keep it up.
greyDot.gif - 886 Bytes Marg't & the children all send their' love to you and Mother & Duncan & our little boys, tell them to be good & smart boys. I am as ever your affectionate brother

(P.S. on edge of page)
I am much better of my cough, think I would be well were it not for the dust, it is very dry here.
