Rocinha (Brazil), Agt. 2nd 1879
My dear Uncle & Auntie,
I re'cd yesterday your letter of June 6th. Am surprised you did not get before a short letter from me written in May and stating that I would send you a little money in June which I did. I trust you have recd it before now. Twas a Bill for $100.00. Exchange was so very low that it seemed like thowing money away to send any more than was absolutely necessary.
I am here trying to sell this place, which if I can do I shall go back to the States. Old "Muito Masgras" son-in-law has offered me five contos which is the largest cash offer I have had - If I do sell, I don't know what I shall do when I get back to the States. I will have very little cash, and shall have to huncker down to work. If I can get a vessel to New Orleans I will have a way up and see you before going any where else.
I would enclose the 2nd for Bill of exchange. but as I hope to go before long. and you had not had time when you wrote to get the first. I will keep it till further notice.
Hoping to see you soon or at least write you from a warmer post.
I am as ever,
your affte nephew
