Dear Sister, I have Just Received your letter of the 17th. I am Well And hope you Are the Same. I didn't know whether to Write to Day or Not. As we Are Going to be paid off on the second of May. We was Mustered to Day for one years pay And Signed the Pay Roll for ten Months of it. I hope they Will Muster us out by the first of June. I want A month to myself to cure My Eyes before I can do Anything. I dont Do Much Now, but the Sun is so hot And the Ground is Sandy. I use strong Salt Water which is Doing the good. I dont think I shall get my Likeness taken till I get home. its No use to spend Money for Nothing. you Must Not Be Disappointed.

We have A prospect of peace Which Makes the Boys Anxious to get home to harvest, but I guess Some of them Wouldn't do much if they was at home. I think I had better Wait till Tuesday And Send you A green Back inside of this paper. I have plenty of Stamps At present. I have Bought fifty Cts Worth. I'll Wait A Day or two And then finish it.

Wednesday, May 3rd.

Well peggy we Aint paid yet but Expect to be this Afternoon. I have A sty on left Eye And its rather painful but I think It will Do my Eye some Good. We have had News to Day the Sherman & Johnson has Agreed to Disband their Armies And Send them home. And that Sherman is Arrested And is going to be court martialed. I hope they Will if he As given the Rebels Such Liberty. But I hope it is Not So. We Are having very fine Weather this Month So far.

I must wait A little While And See Whether we Shall see Any Money or Not.

May 4th 1865

We Got paid yesterday Afternoon. Hes one of the Slowest pay Masters I ever Saw. he paid six companies And commenced paying the other four this Afternoon. I have been Down town to Day loading Ammunition from the forts that the Rebels Left. I Saw and Extra with the capture of Booth. And the Surrender of Joe Johnston. Both is very good As Reliable has it is official. Which is True Every time. I must close. I will Send you five Dollars.
