Mobile May 14th 1865.Dear Sister, I Received your Letter of the 26th April on the 4th And Another Dated 30th yesterday. they Both found me well. And I hope this Will find you All the same. I have plenty of stamps And other Writing Materials, And plenty of Money. I have sent some of it home I suppose you Will have heard that Texas means to fight. We Are under orders to be ready to go Into the field with one Hundred Rounds of Ammunition. But they Dont appear to be Making Any preparations. it May only Allow for Us to go on some railroad or other. one hundred rounds of cartridges is Nothing to go in th field with.
Our Brigade is pretty well Scattered. two of our Co.s is At Pascagula. the 30th Missouri Is At fort Spanish, the 24th Ill has A part of their Regt. off some Where. We Never had it Announced to Us how Many rounds there Was for Us before. I think the Weather Is to hot to make much of A Campaign till fall. they May Assemble their forces together on the frontier During the summer heat So As to Be ready in the fall to invade the state. I Wouldn't give much for texas if our Army has to go through it. they will go like A Herd of swine, they Will Destroy More then they Will Eat.
I suppose you know its thirty three Months to Day Since I Enlisted. if it wasn't for the texans I believe we should have been Mustered out by the Middle of June. there's An order Not to issue Any more Clothing or forage After the first of June. they Act as though they meant to Do Much for a While. I think Kirby Will come to When he Sees we Are Determined to fight him. He'll find out we have plenty of Men to Clean him out if he is At home. I Must close. it takes A month to get an Answer to A letter from here.
I Remain your affectionate Brother, Jos. Slagg
