Ken & Tomas in Santa Elena Canyon. Small fault highlighted on the opposite cliff (sorry, couldn't help myself, I'm a geologist). For the uninitiated, a fault is where rock has fractured and moved. In this case rock on the left side of the fault has moved down relative to the right side. The plane of the fault (the surface along which it broke and slipped) is represented by the steep white line. The arrow shows the direction of movement of the left side relative to the right. The near horizontal lines are drawn along an easily identifiable rock layer. Notice that the layer is offset at the fault plane where it fractured and moved.

At the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon showing the Rio Grande River.
U.S. on the left and Mexico on the right.
