W5TI operated as 3A this year in the ARRL
Field Day. After being absent from FD last year due to a predicted 100% chance of rain -
which didn't materialize - we decided to have a scaled-back event this year. We only
operated Saturday until about 9PM with no operatons on Sunday.
Setting up stations again near the lake and ballfields were Glenn (N5AV), Bill (W5HTG)
and Bob (W5XC). The weather was pleasant for June in Houston and no danger of rain
observed. Glenn used a wire dipole antenna, Bob used the club's 6-meter beam and HF
verticals, while Bill used a Wilson trapped vertical that Lawson supplied. Equipment
and generator worked well.
Band conditions were OK, but nothing to get excited about. With the current sunspot cycle
near a low, ten and fifteen meters were nearly worthless. Six meters did provide some nice
contacts, however.
Now to our contest results. We made a total of 95 SSB contacts and 115 CW contacts (210 total
contacts). We recived 300 bonus points for 100% emergency power and 50 points for submitting
our log to the ARRL via the web. Our total score was [(95 x 1) + (115 x 2)] x 2 + 350 =1000 points.
