Who am I? My name is Tom H. Robb - just call me "The Old Gardener" - and I was born in Shreveport, La. a way back there in 1924 - but only because my Mama was there at the time. Actually, I was started in Texas and have spent most of my lifetime in Texas - as a small boy at Lufkin and in Houston since 1932. Golly, gee! - that is a long time ain't it?
I grew up in "Po-Dunk" (Houston, Denver-Harbor Addition), went to John Marshall Junior High (not Middle School then) and Jeff Davis High School, graduating in 1939. Back in those days our football team was consistently Houston City Champs. We didn't have much money - who did then - in fact I was 19 years old before I found out I was under-privileged - so I started to Texas A&M in the fall of 1939 and saw us win the National Championship in football that year. I finished up in 1943 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
I had only one job interview when I graduated - it was kinda one-sided because it was with Uncle Sam and he told me I didn't have a choice - we didn't think about going to Canada or protesting and going to Oxford in those days. But I ended up in the Army Air Corps and got an expense paid trip to the Pacific until late summer of 1946 when I came home and went to work for "The Light Company". Uncle Sam liked me so much that he invited me back for a couple of years during the Korean "Police Action". When that was over I returned to the Light Company and stayed with them for 41 years. I also stayed in the Air Force Reserves for 33 year - everyone told me I was crazy to do it but on the first of each month when I get that Chicken Colonel's retired pay check, I get the last laugh.
I have a wonderful wife, Gloria (my best present from WW the 2nd) - a beautiful daughter, Kathy who has a devoted husband, Glen. Kathy gave us two grandchildren, a grandson, J.P and a granddaughter, Kara. In January 1995, in Christchurch, New Zealand, Gloria and I celebrated our Golden Wedding Aniversary - 50 years - how has she put up with me for so long?
Yes, I'm an Aggie - and proud of it! I like a good Aggie joke - but only if I'm telling it. I register all of my software with the FIRM NAME of "Retired n' lovin' it". I enjoy computin' - particularly Web Surfin', pitchur takin', travelin', gardenin', and just plain ole relaxin'. I consider retirement "the best job I ever had" and I spend a lot of time volunteering to do "things that you couldn't have paid me to do at one time". I wouldn't trade it for the world.
