Make life easy

Cycle between open windows: Alt+Tab, Alt+Tab, Alt+Tab, etc.

To cycle through open windows and minimized programs: Alt+ESC

Quickly minimize or maximize windows: Double-click on the Title Bar to minimize or maximize, depending on the current state.

Quickly move open windows: Click anywhere on the Title Bar, hold and drag.

Quickly arrange open windows: SHIFT+F4 - Tile - arrange open windows so all are visible and there is no overlapping.

Quickly arrange open windows: SHIFT+F5 - Cascade - stack open windows so only the title bars of all but the top window are visible.

Windows: Reserved Character Codes For Paintbrush, Notepad And Cardfile

Microsoft included a list of reserved character codes for use in printed output for Paintbrush, Notepad and Cardfile:

Code &d for current date

Code &f for current filename

Code &p for current page number

Code &t for current time

Formatting codes include:

Code &c to center text

Code &l to left justify text

Code &r to right justify text

Windows Write: Quick Text Selection

All commands below are used with the mouse pointer positioned to the left of a line. The mouse pointer is positioned correctly when it appears as an arrow rather than an I-beam. Many of these commands will also work in other Windows applications.

To highlight one line of text move mouse pointer to left of line, click once

To highlight entire line plus as above, hold down Shift key

To highlight paragraph move mouse pointer to left margin of paragraph, double-click

To highlight paragraph plus as above, hold down Shift key

To highlight paragraphs below continue double-clicking

To highlight entire document put mouse pointer in left margin, press Ctrl key while clicking

The following keystrokes may be used to select items in any document window:

To highlight one line of text UP, SHIFT+Up Arrow

To highlight one line of text DOWN, SHIFT+Down Arrow

To highlight current position to beginning of document SHIFT+Ctrl+Home

To highlight current position to end of document SHIFT+Ctrl+End

Windows Clipboard: Manipulating Selected Items

Once selected items are marked, use the following commands:

To cut highlighted area to clipboard press Ctrl+X or SHIFT+Del

To copy highlighted area to clipboard press Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Ins

To paste contents of clipboard press Ctrl+V or SHIFT+Ins

To copy entire screen to clipboard press PrintScrn

To copy active window to clipboard press Alt+PrintScrn

To undo last editing action press Ctrl+Z or ALT+BackSpace

Note that "Cut" removes the highlighted area from the source, while "Copy" does not.

Windows: Closing Windows And Quitting Applications

To quit Windows or to quit an application (if in Program Manager) press ALT+F4

To close active document window or group window press CTRL+F4

Windows Write: Keystroke Shortcuts To Position Pointer

Note: Use 5 on the Numeric Keypad ONLY with NUM LOCK off.

To move to next sentence press 5+Left Arrow

To move to previous sentence press 5+Right Arrow

To move to next paragraph press 5+Down Arrow

To move to previous paragraph press 5+Up Arrow

To move to next page(only if document has been paginated) press 5+PgDn

To move to previous page press 5+PgUp

Windows Write: Insert Manual Pagebreak

Position cursor where the Page Break should occur and press CTRL+Enter.

Windows Paintbrush: Keystroke Shortcuts

To simulate mouse:

To move cursor with Arrow Key

To click left press Ins

To click right press Del

To double-click left press F9+Ins

To drag press Ins+Arrow Key

Moving around

To move to left side of drawing press SHIFT+Home

To move to right side of drawing press SHIFT+End

To move to top press Home

To move to bottom press End

To move left one screen press SHIFT+PgUp

To move right one screen press SHIFT+PgDn

To move down one screen press PgDn

To move up one screen press PgUp

Windows Program Manager: Keystroke Shortcuts

To Move between groups press CTRL+F6 or CTRL+Tab

To Move between items within a Group Window press Arrow Key

Windows: Keystrokes To Switch Between Applications

To switch: Between applications press ALT+Tab

To switch: To next application press ALT+Esc

To switch: To previous application press SHIFT+Alt+Esc

To switch: To Task List press CTRL+Esc

To switch: To DOS Box: toggle press ALT+Enter

Windows: Bypass The Startup Group

Hold down the SHIFT key while Windows is loading to bypass the Startup Group.

Dos: Bypass The DOS Startup Files

Hold down the SHIFT key while DOS loads to bypass the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
