New Center

HAL-PC's new Learning Center opened for business in early January 1997. The new Center is at 400 Medical Center Blvd., Suite 210 in Webster, Texas and will bring the educational benefits of the organization to the greater Clear Lake area.

The Center offers classes and training. The "bread and butter" course is a Computer Basics for Seniors, including sections on Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Windows 95, Introduction to Word Processing, Introduction to the Internet and Purchasing a Computer. We have recently added a Beginner Plus course that reinforces the lessons learned in the Basics course by exploring additional features of Windows 95 and word processing.

In May we are adding a Basic Spreadsheet course and a stand-alone Word Processor Course. We are planning for courses on the BBS and Internet 101. Our philosophy is to develop courses and teach what Seniors tell us they want to learn. All classes through May 19th are filled.

The new Center was made possible by the generous donation of a 2,000 sq. ft. facility, paid utilities and furniture by the Columbia Medical Centers, Southeast Quadrant. Computers and computer peripheral equipment were donated by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Cash donations were received from the Clear Lake Branch of Senior Friends; Texas Commerce Bank, Clear Lake Area; Rohm and Haas Texas, Inc. and several individual contributors. Finally, the unselfish donations of time and the talents of many volunteers combined to pull all of the pieces together, and continue to be the "glue" that holds it together on a day-to-day basis. The satellite is staffed completely by volunteers.

If you live in the area, or are just passing through, please stop by and visit. We need instructors and we're always open to new ideas. Come and help us make a good thing even better or just join in the HAL-PC learning experience in the Clear Lake Area. Our hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
