HAL-PC to the Rescue!, Part II
Distress calls continue to abound. Some members apparently feel like they are stranded on a rapidly melting ice flow as it shrinks beneath them. Lets see if we cant expand the help foundation to a little safer level of PC knowledge.
Last month we started talking about where members, particularly new users, could find help in acquiring a PC, learning the basics of its operating system, and get answers to general question in a safe environment. This month, as promised, we will delve into the areas of help for the Internet and in upgrading your PC.
Im comfortable with my basic PC operation; now how do I get on the Internet?
First of all, make sure you are truly comfortable in basic uses of your PC before attempting to become active on the Internet. Too many members buy a PC and expect to be an active internet participant the next day. That is akin to buying your first car and expecting to race at Indy the next week. A few basic skills need to be learned before progressing to higher levels applications; such as the various internet browsers and other software.
Even before submitting your application to join HALNet (the HAL-PC internet service), I would encourage you to attend the Internet 101 class. It will give you a basic understanding of the internet and what is involved with its use. It may also tell you if you are really ready to sign up and use the services or if you need a little more PC experience first.
Beyond the initial Internet 101 class, progress to the Internet 102 class for further understanding of this marvelous tool. Also plan the regularly attend the Internet SIG to hear presentations about the various software used on the internet and to ask questions at the Q&A session each meeting.
Im on the Internet; does HAL-PC have newsgroups where I may ask questions?
Oh yes indeed! There are three of them in fact halpc.general, halpc.halnet.questions, and halpc.halnet,ISDN. The first, halpc.general, is a forum for any questions on HAL-PC and its operations. The second, halpc.halnet.questions, prides a forum to get answers to anything pertaining to HALNet, from modem speeds to connectivity issues. The last, halpc.halnet.questions.isdn, is limited to discussions of ISDN service connections (a separate type of connection from your telephone company).
My PC is getting outmoded; where may I learn about upgrading it?
Last month I mentioned the (How to) Build or Buy a PC SIG as a place to learn what PC to buy. Its other function deals with component upgrades to improve your PC to more current standards. Another excellent SIG to follow in this area is the PC Upgrade SIG. Both of these will do their best to help you have a PC with whatever latest whistles and bells you want, or can afford. There is also a learning curve involved in this process, so plan on attending multiple meeting to gain the knowledge you need.
